Frequently Asked Questions

What imaging services are offered at the Malta location?

The Ortho Malta Imaging Center provides high-resolution MRI and digital X-ray services focused exclusively on orthopedic diagnostics. MRI scans evaluate soft tissues such as ligaments, cartilage, tendons, and discs, while X-rays offer detailed images of bones and joints. We image areas including the spine, knees, hips, shoulders, hands, and feet.

Why do I need both MRI and X-ray imaging?

Each modality serves a different purpose: X-rays are ideal for evaluating bones and joint alignment, while MRIs provide detailed imaging of soft tissue structures. Using both allows your provider to pinpoint the root cause of your symptoms and create a comprehensive treatment plan.

How do I prepare for an MRI or X-ray appointment?

Please wear comfortable, metal-free clothing and remove any jewelry or accessories before your appointment. If you have implants or medical devices, let our staff know in advance. X-rays are quick, painless, and typically take just a few minutes. MRI exams usually last 20 to 45 minutes and require you to stay still. The machine makes loud tapping sounds during the scan, but you’ll receive ear protection and can communicate with the technologist at any time.

What should I expect during the imaging process?

For X-rays, a technologist will position you and take multiple images quickly. During an MRI, you’ll lie on a padded table that slides into the scanner. While the scan is painless, you’ll hear loud tapping sounds. You’ll be given ear protection and can communicate with the technologist throughout the procedure. Your comfort and safety are always our top priorities.

How soon will my provider receive the results?

Your images are reviewed by musculoskeletal radiologists, and a report is delivered to your provider within 24–48 hours. If you are seeing an OrthoNY specialist, your results will be reviewed at your follow-up visit.

Are the Malta MRI and X-ray services covered by insurance?

Most major insurance plans, Medicare, and workers’ compensation cover MRI and X-ray services at the OrthoNY Malta Imaging Center. Our administrative team will confirm your coverage and obtain any necessary pre-authorizations. Self-pay options are available with transparent pricing for patients without insurance.
