Precision Diagnostics for Better Outcomes

Imaging in orthopedics plays a vital role in patient care by leveraging advanced technologies such as X-rays, MRIs, CT scans, and ultrasounds to provide clear and comprehensive views of bones, joints, muscles, and soft tissues. These tools are essential for accurate diagnosis, effective treatment planning, and precise monitoring of recovery. By offering detailed insights into the musculoskeletal system, imaging enables our providers to deliver targeted and timely interventions that improve patient outcomes.

At OrthoNY, we believe that exceptional orthopedic care begins with an accurate diagnosis. That’s why we provide comprehensive, state-of-the-art imaging services, all conveniently available under one roof. Our digital X-ray systems deliver high-resolution images in seconds, enabling providers to quickly evaluate fractures, joint alignment, and bone spacing with precision. For more detailed views of soft tissues, MRI technology uses powerful magnets and radio waves to capture clear images of ligaments, tendons, cartilage, and spinal discs, which is crucial for diagnosing conditions like meniscus tears, rotator cuff injuries, labral damage, and herniated discs. When even greater anatomical detail is needed, our CT scans offer advanced, 3D imaging for a more comprehensive view of complex structures. We also offer ultrasound imaging, which provides real-time visualization of soft tissues such as tendons and bursae, all without radiation exposure.

Our imaging services are delivered by licensed Radiologic Technologists and interpreted by board-certified radiologists who collaborate closely with our orthopedic surgeons. Whether you’re recovering from surgery, managing a chronic issue, or dealing with a new injury, imaging capabilities at OrthoNY provide the clarity you need to move forward with confidence.

The staff at OrthoNY were very welcoming and helpful upon check-in and check-out. Dr. Aronowitz was a great listener and told me exactly what he thought was going on after evaluating my situation. He ordered an MRI to be sure he had all of the information he needed to diagnose my issue and let me know there were several options for treatment based on what the diagnosis might be. He immediately scheduled the MRI and a date to discuss the findings. He also asked me if I had questions. Dr. Aronowitz was thorough and congenial, and I look forward to our next appointment and his advice for treatment. Although this is a busy office, the operation is efficiently run, everyone is friendly and professional, and the premises is very clean.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of imaging does OrthoNY provide?

At OrthoNY, our imaging department offers a comprehensive range of advanced diagnostic tools to evaluate both bone and soft tissue conditions. Our imaging services include:

  • Digital X-ray: Uses low-dose radiation to capture detailed images of bones. Ideal for diagnosing fractures, assessing joint alignment, and detecting degenerative changes.
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): Utilizes a strong magnetic field and radio waves to produce high-resolution images of soft tissues such as cartilage, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and spinal discs.
  • CT Scans: Combines multiple X-ray images taken from various angles to create detailed cross-sectional views. Particularly effective for evaluating complex fractures and assisting with surgical planning.
  • Ultrasound: Employs sound waves to create real-time images of soft tissues including tendons, bursae, and fluid collections—all without radiation exposure.
  • Fluoroscopy: Offers live X-ray guidance used during joint injections and certain minimally invasive procedures.
  • Electromyography: Electrical recording of muscle activity that aids in the diagnosis of neuromuscular disease.

Your provider will recommend the most appropriate imaging modality based on your specific symptoms and diagnostic needs.

Do I need a referral for imaging?

In most cases, diagnostic imaging requires a referral from a healthcare provider. At OrthoNY, your orthopedic specialist will order the appropriate imaging after a clinical evaluation. If you’re referred by an outside physician, an OrthoNY provider will evaluate and order the necessary imaging tests to coincide with your care plan. While some screening exams may be available via self-referral, diagnostic imaging for musculoskeletal issues should always be coordinated by a clinician familiar with your medical history.

How should I prepare for my imaging test?

Preparation depends on the type of imaging:

  • X-rays and Ultrasound: Minimal prep; patients may need to wear a gown and remove jewelry or clothing over the area being scanned.
  • MRI: Remove all metal items, including watches, jewelry, hair clips, and clothing with metallic fibers. Patients will be screened for implants (e.g., pacemakers).
  • CT Scans: Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. You may be asked to change into a gown. Remove any metal objects, including jewelry, eyeglasses, dentures, or hearing aids, as these can interfere with the image quality.

Is diagnostic imaging covered by insurance?

Most health insurance plans do cover diagnostic imaging when it is considered medically necessary by a physician. However, coverage details can vary significantly depending on your individual policy.

Some insurance plans require pre-authorization for certain tests, such as MRI or CT scans, while others may limit the number of scans allowed per year or mandate that imaging be performed at designated facilities.

To help streamline the process, our staff will verify your insurance coverage prior to your exam. This includes confirming eligibility, securing any necessary approvals.

When will I get my results?

One of the key advantages of on-site imaging at OrthoNY is the speed and convenience of accessing results. For many X-ray and ultrasound exams, your orthopedic provider can often review the images during the same appointment and discuss the findings with you in real time.

MRI and CT scans are interpreted by a board-certified radiologist who specializes in musculoskeletal imaging. The radiologist’s report is typically available within 24 to 48 hours and is sent directly to your provider. Your physician will then review the results with you at a scheduled follow-up, ensuring you fully understand the diagnosis and recommended next steps.

Are there risks associated with imaging?

Medical imaging is a powerful tool for diagnosis and treatment, and while generally safe, each imaging modality comes with specific considerations.

X-rays and CT scans involve exposure to ionizing radiation. The amount used is low and carefully controlled under the “As Low As Reasonably Achievable” (ALARA) principle to minimize exposure. If you are pregnant or think you might be, it’s important to inform your healthcare provider, as radiation can pose a risk to a developing fetus.

MRI scans do not use radiation but rely on a strong magnetic field. Patients with certain medical implants, such as pacemakers or aneurysm clips, may not be eligible for MRI. Additionally, some individuals may experience anxiety or claustrophobia inside the scanner; in such cases, sedation prescribed by your OrthoNY provider or we have in-house wide bore MRI options available.

Contrast dyes, which may be used during some MRI exams, can occasionally cause allergic reactions or impact kidney function. Be sure to discuss any allergies or relevant medical history with your provider beforehand.

Ultrasound is considered very safe. It uses sound waves instead of radiation and is commonly used in prenatal care and soft tissue imaging.

At OrthoNY, patient safety and comfort are top priorities. Our technologists and radiologists follow strict protocols to ensure that every imaging study is performed with the highest standards of care.
