One of the best urgent medical assistance I’ve ever experienced. The staff was extremely helpful and supportive. When I entered the building I was in so much pain. The lady at the front desk was very helpful, ensuring that another lovely team member accompanied me to the area where I was registered, hand held and all, and with all the emotional support a patient in pain would appreciate. The receptionist who got me registered was equally as sweet. Shortly after which the doctor came out to receive me. I was seen by the doctor before I could finish all my paperwork. I could not have asked for a better service and as urgently as I got at OrthoNY. When I say my entire visit was exceptional. At no point throughout my entire visit did I have any negative encounters. Thanks to you Dr. Suslak and your team for such exceptional service. I truly appreciate you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What conditions do you treat at Schenectady Physical Therapy?

At OrthoNY in Schenectady, our physical therapy team treats a range of musculoskeletal conditions. These include post-operative care for hip replacements, rotator cuff repairs, ACL reconstruction, and spinal surgery. We also treat acute and chronic injuries affecting the foot and ankle, such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, and ankle sprains.

Patients with degenerative joint conditions like osteoarthritis or spinal stenosis also benefit from structured therapy programs designed to reduce pain and improve function. Our therapists also help manage pain syndromes, including low back pain, neck strain, and shoulder impingement. Additionally, we support patients recovering from sports injuries, including muscle tears, ligament strains, and overuse injuries common among athletes and active adults.

At OrthoNY, we personalize each patient’s treatment plan. During the first visit, we perform a full evaluation of the patient’s condition, range of motion, strength, and function. From there, we build a progressive therapy schedule tailored to each person’s recovery goals. Our Schenectady location serves a diverse patient population from all around the Capital District.

From patients recovering after surgery to others addressing long-standing pain, our goal is to restore the ability to move confidently and comfortably.

Why do people go to physical therapy?

People attend physical therapy for many reasons beyond surgical recovery. It can help improve mobility, reduce pain, rebuild strength, and restore function after an injury or as part of a long-term wellness plan. At OrthoNY in Schenectady, physical therapy supports recovery after orthopedic surgery, helps improve balance and flexibility, prevents future injuries, manages chronic pain, and assists patients in safely returning to daily activities, work, or sports. Whether you’re healing from a procedure, managing discomfort, or simply looking to move more confidently, physical therapy can play a key role in helping you regain function and improve your quality of life. Our team creates personalized treatment plans based on your unique goals and needs, so you can get back to doing what you enjoy.

What should I expect at my first visit?

During their first appointment at the OrthoNY Schenectady Physical Therapy location, patients can expect a thorough initial evaluation. A licensed physical therapist will review the patient’s medical history, surgical reports (if applicable), and conduct a physical assessment. This includes evaluating strength, range of motion, flexibility, balance, posture, and gait.

The therapist will also discuss the patient’s symptoms, goals, daily activities, and any barriers to mobility or comfort. Based on the evaluation, the therapist will then create a personalized treatment plan, outlining short- and long-term goals. Patients may begin light therapy during the first visit, such as stretching, manual techniques, or simple exercises to activate specific muscle groups.

When coming to a physical therapy appointment, we recommend wearing comfortable clothing that allows for easy movement, such as athletic wear. Patients should also bring any referral paperwork or imaging reports, if available. Our Schenectady location features a clean, accessible space with advanced physical therapy equipment and private treatment areas.

Our goal is to create a positive, empowering experience from the first visit. Each therapist will also make sure to educate patients about home exercises and schedule follow-up sessions that align with their specific recovery progress. We value consistency and engagement to help every patient reach their recovery milestones as efficiently as possible.

When should I begin therapy after surgery or injury?

The timing for physical therapy after surgery depends on the procedure and the surgeon’s recommendations. In general, therapy begins within a few days to a couple of weeks post-surgery. For example, patients who have undergone total hip or knee replacement often begin therapy within the first week to aid mobility and circulation. After shoulder surgery, like rotator cuff repair, therapy may begin with gentle passive movements initially, progressing into active motion later on, as healing continues.

At OrthoNY in Schenectady, our physical therapists work closely with our orthopedic surgeons to determine the best timeline for starting therapy. Early therapy helps reduce stiffness, improve range of motion, and promote proper healing. Our therapists are trained to monitor each patient’s recovery progress and adjust their plan as needed to ensure a safe and effective recovery.

By starting physical therapy promptly, patients can often prevent complications like muscle atrophy or joint immobility. For those who are unsure when to begin therapy, our staff can coordinate directly with OrthoNY surgical providers to create an appropriate schedule. We prioritize communication and continuity of care to give every patient the best possible outcome.

How long do physical therapy sessions last and how many will I need?

The duration of a physical therapy program, as well as each individual session, depends on several factors, including the nature of the patient’s condition, their recovery progress, and their individual goals. On average, patients attend physical therapy two to three times per week for four to eight weeks, for about one hour each session. However, more complex surgeries or chronic conditions may require longer treatment plans.

Physical therapists monitor each patient’s progress closely and make adjustments to their plans as needed. Physical therapists will complete periodic re-evaluations to track improvements in mobility, strength, pain reduction, and function. Patients recovering from shoulder surgeries, such as labral repair, may require extended therapy timelines, while sprains or muscle strains may resolve more quickly.

We emphasize goal-driven treatment. Once patients reach key milestones and demonstrate independent progress, therapy frequency may taper off. In some cases, patients transition to a home-based exercise program or wellness plan supported by our therapists.

Our goal is to empower each patient with the tools and confidence they need to maintain long-term mobility. Therapists collaborate with patients to define what success looks like and guide them toward sustainable outcomes.

Is my insurance accepted and what will treatment cost?

Yes, most major insurance providers cover physical therapy at OrthoNY in Schenectady. We participate in a range of plans, including private insurance, Medicare, workers’ compensation, and no-fault carriers. Coverage and out-of-pocket costs vary depending on the patient’s specific plan, deductible, and co-pay requirements.

Our administrative team is available to verify benefits and walk patients through the billing process before their first visit. For patients requiring pre-authorization or a referral, we can help coordinate the necessary paperwork and communicate with providers.

Understanding your insurance is important. We encourage all patients to contact their insurance company to ask about coverage for physical therapy services, including how many visits are included per year and any cost-sharing requirements. For patients with a high-deductible plan or who are uninsured, we also offer self-pay options and flexible payment arrangements.

Your health and recovery are our top priority. Our Schenectady physical therapy team will support you every step of the way, from clinical care to administrative coordination, so you can focus on healing and regaining mobility.
