What is the difference between an orthopedic doctor and a sports medicine doctor?

Sports medicine physicians specialize in caring for injuries caused during sports or activities. How are chronic conditions like arthritis treated across specialties?
Arthritis, which is inflammation of a joint, can affect the hips, knees, shoulders, hands, elbows, or ankles, and can be diagnosed and treated by orthopedic providers. Depending on the location and severity of your arthritis, your surgeon may recommend noninvasive treatments first, including medications and joint injections that can relieve pain for weeks or months. If noninvasive and injection treatments fail to provide lasting relief, your orthopedic surgeon may recommend surgery, such as total or partial joint replacement, or joint resurfacing.
